New Public Art Installation Celebrates the People and Places of Sugar House
Local artist team Tomato Tomahto, Jeremy Morgan and Brooke Smart, have been commissioned to create The People in Your Neighborhood, seven colorful sculptures that will pop up across two connected sites: five along McClelland Street (2100 South to Sugarmont Avenue) and two inside Fairmont Park. The artwork is spread out on purpose, so you'll encounter the individual sculptures as you move between the street and the park, discovering a new piece around the next corner.
The sculptures themselves are familiar faces, in a way: a dog walker mid-stroll, a grandmother gardening with her grandchild, a jogger catching their stride. They're small, everyday snapshots of life in Sugar House.
Keep an eye out for the interactive piece tucked into Fairmont Park: three sculptural pillars, each split into movable sections painted with local symbols. Spin them around, and you can mix and match to make your own combination — inspired by the old surrealist "exquisite corpse" game, where nobody sees the whole picture until it's done. Bring a friend, or a kid, or just yourself.
How the artists were chosen
The commission was awarded through a competitive Request for Qualifications process open to Utah-based professional artists and artist-led teams. Of 26 eligible applications, the Salt Lake Art Design Board selected three finalists for proposal development. With input from community stakeholders, the Board unanimously recommended local artist team Tomato Tomahto based on the playful, community-centered approach of their proposal, its strong storytelling, and its ability to create a cohesive experience across both sites.
About the artists
Tomato Tomahto is Jeremy Morgan and Brooke Smart, both based in Salt Lake County. Morgan is an architect and sculptor by training, with a BFA in Sculpture from the University of Utah and a Master of Architecture from SCI-Arc. Smart is a mural artist and illustrator with a BFA in Illustration from BYU. On their own, they each bring something different to the table; together, they've built a reputation for design-driven work that leans into play, whimsy, and unexpected materials. You may have already seen their work around town — they've collaborated with the Grand America Hotel, EVO Hotel, The Maven District, and Canyons Resort, among others.
What’s Next
Fabrication and installation will roll out in phases, timed with the ongoing improvements at Fairmont Park and McClelland Street. Since the park's upgrades will continue for a few more years, you might spot pieces of the artwork along McClelland Street before the Fairmont Park sculptures go in. The whole project is expected to be complete by the end of 2028.
